Suey Sins brings Sexy Shanghai to Sydney

A slice of 1920s Shanghai has arrived in Sydney, with the official opening of Surry Hills’ new small bar, Suey Sins. Tucked away on Campbell St, this bar is named after a famous Shanghai call girl, the venue offers sensory cocktails and Asian fusion small eats inside a pre-war Shanghai inspired atmosphere, complete with neon lighting and urban street arts.

Suey Sins is the brainchild of Eli West, a newcomer who took the inspiration from her life of travel and pin-up girl Suey Sin, who was an icon of the ‘Shanghai Naughties’. West has created a bar that is diverse and eclectic, fittingly placed in the amongst the young urban dwellers of modern day Surry Hills.

West said, “I have spent most of my life travelling in Indonesia, and have some Chinese heritage and I like to think I may be related to a character very similar to Suey Sin. I love the idea of this seductive, alluring woman who had old world charm and poise but also knew exactly what she wanted and how to get it. I see a bit of that in myself and the young women who will drink here.”

The kitchen at Suey Sins is open until 12am each night making it perfect for a late night feed. The social atmosphere with funky beats is complimented by a killer list of cocktails named after the seven deadly sins. Suey Sins has partnered with the guys at Tsuru to bring one of the best list of Asian small bites from the Tsuru Bao, Mi Goreng Spring Rolls ($12) – the hero of the menu, and the Deep Fried Nori Vermicelli Rolls with Lettuce Wraps ($10) as well as the Lotus Root Nachos ($14) – cheese, salsa, sour cream and guacamole and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, for dessert there is the Honey butter chips with vanilla ice-cream ($14).

The LUST cocktail ($16) is a love at first sight kind of drink – white rum, blended pink dragon fruit, coconut water and lemon syrup, it is as delicious on the eye as it tastes. The GREED ($17) is Suey’s take on the classic mojito with spiced rum, palm sugar, mint, lime, and topped with French champagne.

Suey Sins is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm – Late

Level 1, corner of Campbell & Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills.
