October is Penfolds Collection month and, without fail, Australia’s most well-known collection of premium wines wowed the who’s who at events across the region. Drinks World attended the Sydney shindig, and can report back that the 2018’s Collection doesn’t disappoint.
This year’s Penfold’s Collection launch was set at the Smoke Bar, Barangaroo House, with ‘taste-setting’ (yes, it’s now a word) guests including: Ksenija Lukich, Alyce Tran, Tanja Gacic, Nadia Fairfax, Deborah Symond O’Neil, Brooke Testoni and Sara Crampton enjoying the pzaz. The party saw the venue transformed in to an immersive taste experience hosted by Penfolds Winemaker Matt Woo and Penfolds Australian Ambassador Zoe Warrington.
Barangaroo House chefs went all out and created a customised menu of canapés which included the much hyped ‘Grange Sandwich’ – getting it’s debut to celebrate the launch of the Penfolds 2014 Grange. The sandwich features some sumptuous South Australia’s Wagyu beef and lets face it, if you can drink Grange with a sandwich you know you’ve made it.
The deal is available for punters exclusively at Smoke Bar for two weeks (started last Friday the 19 of October) and will cost you $30 for the sandwich alone or $120 paired
with a glass of 2014 Grange (75ml).
While Grange is the hero, there are 19 red and white wines spanning five vintages in the collection; my stand out was the Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling. At $40 a bottle you can take home 21 bottles of the Bin 51 or one bottle of the 2014 Grange, and still have some change for a dozen oysters.
The Collection is available globally (from last Thursday, the 18 of October) at select fine wine stores and Penfolds Cellar Doors. For more information visit www.penfolds.com.
