South Australian bartender Abby Wegener has taken out the top spot at the 2018 Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition held overnight in Sydney.
Abby competed against six of Australia’s bartending elite to be announced as the country’s third National Winner.
The competitors were challenged to create a bespoke serve that evoked Australia, and were judged on their originality, quality of service, chosen flavours and the cocktail’s appearance.
Abby’s cocktail ‘The Muldejewangk’ stole the show, with its unique flavours and quirky back-story, that tells of a mythical creature that would snatch any child who dared stray too close to the banks of the Murray River.
“I am incredibly humbled,” says Abby. “I can’t believe that eight months after opening my own bar and shaking my first cocktail, that I can be in this position. I feel very blessed and excited to represent all the female bartenders and, of course, the tiki bartenders out there. I can’t wait to go to Mexico!”
Hosted by recently announced Patrón Ambassador, Alejandro Archibald, last night’s event attracted 100 trade, VIP and media guests. The expert judging panel consisted of Head of Patrón AMEA and NAPAC, Patrón Spirits International, Nick Cox; Global Mezcal Ambassador and Founder of Agave Love, Phil Bayly; and Editor in Chief of GQ Australia, Mike Christensen.
Abby is now set to compete against 18 bartenders from across the globe while representing Australia at the Patrón Perfectionists Global Finals, to be held in Mexico in January 2019.
