Step Inside Singapore’s Trendy New Art Space and Bar

In a nod to the much-loved community centres dotted across the region, Telok Ayer Arts Club in Singapore’s Central Business District aims to change the way Singaporeans approach the arts through uniting art, music, food and drinks in one unique space.

The venue will host events and club nights curated by artists in residence to showcase the multidisciplinary nature of the arts. This innovative concept is the brainchild of a group of creatives and hospitality professionals, consisting of Anmari Van Nieuwenhove (SPRMRKT, Singapore Art Musuem); Kamiliah Bahdar (National Museum of Singapore, Asian Film Archive, Galerie Steph etc.); music director Hasnor Sidik (W Hotels, The Lo & Behold Group); and founder of The Supermarket Company, Sue-Shan Quek.

The end result has seen a ground floor shophouse at the edge of Telok Ayer transformed into an art gallery, restaurant and bar. The traditional terracotta tiled façade and impressive wooden door made from 100-year-old teak open up to reveal a neutral space with cement flooring and white and dark green walls. The idea is to provide the artists in residence with a blank canvas for their multidisciplinary works.

Jungle Bird

Guests can indulge in a number of the region’s classic cocktails served from the bespoke white terrazzo bar with blue and green highlights. Industry legend and bar manager, Din Hassan, has created a menu of reinvented classics that draw upon Southeast Asian flavours. This includes age-old regional favourites Pegu Club (S$20), a tart Burmese gin-based cocktail and Kuala Lumpur’s Jungle Bird (S$20), a mix of Mount Gay rum from the barrel and Campari, rounded out with fresh lime and pineapple. There will also be an extended happy hour menu every weekday, with a selection of wines by the glass, draught beers and low-ABV cocktails priced from S$10 between 12:00pm and 7:00pm.

White Lady

Each new artist in residence will see the food and beverage team at Telok Ayer Arts Club create menus of culinary delights and innovate tipples inspired by the artist’s works. Guests are invited to enjoy these limited-time offerings throughout the duration of each artist’s residence.
