Penfolds Experiments With Baijiu and Champagne… Yes, You Read That Correctly

Premium Australian wine brand Penfolds has announced its newest Special Bottlings and you’ll likely be surprised on what’s in store…

Lot. 1990
RRP: $425 AUD
Distributor: Penfolds Cellar Doors and select global travel retail outlets

First cab of the rank is Lot. 1990, a pot distilled single batch brandy that has matured in oak for 28 years. The barrels used to develop this unique spirit included those used to mature other releases such as the Grandfather Rare Tawny and the Penfolds Chardonnay. On the nose, intense notes of vanilla, cinnamon, mocha, dried apricots, prunes and nectarines come together to evoke an aroma full of vitality. The palate is soft and round, with flavours of marzipan, baked figs, cardamom and cinnamon spice dominating. A splash of the Grandfather Tawny was added to finish, giving the brandy a distinctive bouquet and freshness of flavour. This carefully crafted brandy has a warm and lengthy finish.

Lot. 518
RRP: $150 AUD
Distributor: Penfolds Cellar Doors and select global travel retail outlets

In September, we will see one of the brand’s most experimental releases hit the market – a spirited fortified wine with baijiu. To produce Lot 518, as this release is known, winemaker James Godfrey travelled to several Baijiu distilleries to choose the spirit he believed would best compliment the rich shiraz chosen to make the fortified. The resulting partnership is, surprisingly, an ideal match, as the floral, savoury rice notes of the Baijiu pair well with the depth and softness of the shiraz.

Aniseed from the Baijiu leads the nose, followed by aromas of cherry and plum fruits delivered by the shiraz. The textual, savoury nature and balanced acidity of the Baijiu complements the fruit of the shiraz, resulting in a warm, long and intense palate. The Baijiu’s aniseed notes are balanced by the shiraz’s rich plum, cherry and black fruit flavours to create a rounded and balanced fortified.

Finally, keep a look out next year for, perhaps, Penfold’s most exciting Special Bottling to date – a Champagne! The release will make the brand’s 175thanniversary and more details will be announced soon.
