Australian applications for next year’s New Zealand Winegrowers Scholarships are now open, with a new category added in to the mix.
The ‘One to Watch’ scholarship will be awarded to an emerging sommelier showing promising talent.
Launched in 2015 in collaboration with Sommeliers Australia, the scholarships are now available to working sommeliers from Australia, Asia, Canada, Europe, Ireland, New Zealand, the UAE, the UK and the USA.
Recipients will be taken on an all-expenses paid trip to New Zealand to be immersed in the country’s wine industry and interact with some of the best and brightest in the business.
During the 10-day intensive program, they will sample benchmark wines from New Zealand and across the globe and attend the premier industry events of the International Sauvignon Blanc Celebration in Marlborough and the Chardonnay and Sparkling Symposium in Gisborne.
They will also participate in the special sommeliers-only ‘Sommit’ in Hawke’s Bay, a series of educational workshops and discussions that celebrate some of the lesser known aspects of New Zealand wine. The Sommit’s 20 attendees will be hosted by Master of Wine Stephen Wong and world-renowned sommelier Ronan Sayburn, who attended the first ever Sommit in 2016.
“As sommeliers are the ultimate in-market ambassadors, we know how important it is to offer them an opportunity to experience what makes our country and its wine so unique,” says New Zealand Winegrowers’ Australia Manager, Natalie Grace.
“We are excited to open applications for 2019 and launch the inaugural ‘One to Watch’ category celebrating the role young sommeliers play in our industry.”
If you have a passion for the wine industry and are able to demonstrate a desire to learn about New Zealand wine, submit your application here. Applications close on Friday 31stAugust 2018.
