Singapore, it’s time to tease up that hair and pull out those pastel jackets, we’re going back to the 80s!
The team behind entertainment consultancy A Phat Cat Collective are rewinding back to the decade of colour with their first venue, NINETEEN80.
This retro-themed bar is a nostalgic tribute to all things 80s pop-culture, complete with arcade games, classic cocktails from the era and non-stop Hip Hop, R&B, Disco, Funk and Soul.
Although the 80s is often referred to in the mixology community as the ‘dark ages of drinking’, there’s no denying the enduring popularity of some of the eras classic cocktails. NINETEEN80 is resurrecting all the crowd pleasers but adding a modern twist, like the ‘Ice-T Hustler Remix’ – a Long Island Iced Tea with a hint of cloudy apple; the ‘Super Disco Blend’ – a Blue Lagoon with a yuzu finish; or the Vodka Ribena – a mix of vodka, Ribena and soda, sure to inspire those nostalgic feels.
There will also be list of bespoke cocktails, including the strawberry Donna Summer, served with a sprinkle of sumac powder, and the rum and Malibu-based Club Tropicana, with fresh pineapple, coconut, lime juice and sour plum powder. Really want to reignite the 80s teenager within? They’ll even be serving Classic Bacardi Breezers at S$16 a pop.
On the music front, resident DJs will play a mix of in-house urban beats from the 80s, 90s and 00s. The bar will also be hosting weekly themed nights, including Miss-Demeanor ladies’ night on Wednesdays, and ‘Fight For Your Right’ and ‘Can I Get A…’ nights later in the week, for guests to let down their glorious hair and get their groove on.
The décor will launch you straight back to those 80s golden days, with reclaimed materials such as original cassette tapes on display along with artwork that references iconic arcade games of the era. Enter through the ribbed pink vortex of mirrors, and try your hand at one of the hundreds of 80s and 90s classic arcade games, including PacMan, Space Invaders, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Golden Axe.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled, as this homage to the ‘decade of decadence’ is set to open at the end of June.
