Why Does NSW’s New Independent Bar Association Matter?

The Drinks Industry Show will be kicking off on 18th of June with a panel discussion entitled, ‘Why Does an Independent Bar Association Matter?’

The free discussion aims to educate trade on how the newly formed Independent Bar Association (IBA) in NSW is an important step forward in advocating for the interests of small bars across the state.

Interested industry professionals are invited to come along to Dockside, Darling Harbour, at 4:30pm to hear from key IBA figures Michael Rodrigues, MD of Time Out Australia; Tim Philips-Johansson, owner of Bulletin Place and Dead Ringer; and Four Pillars Gin co-founder and President of the Australian Distillers Association, Stu Gregor.

What is the IBA?

The purpose of the Independent Bars Association is to unite small bar operators from across NSW to give them a stronger voice when lobbying councils and government, with the overall goal the restoration of Sydney and the state as global nightlife destinations.

The IBA officially launched in Sydney last month at a gathering of core members of the NSW bar industry. At the meeting, the need to make small bar ownership more commercially viable through forming connections with the Australian Hotel Association and the Restaurant and Catering Association was discussed and an interim board was established.

Luke Ashton, of Sydney’s The Must Be The Place; Charlie Lehmann, of Ramblin’ Rascal’s Tavern; Pasan Wijesena, of Earl’s Juke Joint and Karl Schlothauer, CEO of House of Pocket group make up this interim board, with an AGM scheduled for September this year.

The membership fee currently sits at $300 per year in order to give the association adequate financial backing and support.
