The Australian Distilled Spirits Awards were announced last month, recognising the excellence of Australian distiller’s in the ever-growing local spirits industry. We compiled the recipients of the champion trophies to bring to you the ultimate list of this year’s must have Australian spirits to stock in your bar.
This unique whisky is created when a dash of peated spirit is added to the distillery’s original profile whisky. The resulting spirit has pervasive citrus tones, a gentle waft of smoke and hints of burnt Australian bush on the nose. Vanilla sweetness on the palate gives way to a creamy aftertaste.
Anther Spirits’ Anther Gin
This is a juniper forward, London dry style gin with punchy citrus flavours and spicy notes of clove, nutmeg and ginger. Bottling this gin at 44% alcohol allows for the botanicals to be full-bodied and aromatic, making it the perfect gin for classic gin cocktails. This spirit is hand-distilled in small batches in Collingwood.
White Light Vodka Original
Dan Murphy’s: $41.99
This clean and crisp vodka is crafted from quality Queensland cane sugar and pristine Victorian water. Triple distilled and chilled charcoal filtered creates a smooth and pure spirit.
St Agnes XO Grand Reserve
Dark amber in colour, the grand reserve has a full palate and an extremely rich and complex mouthfeel. Christmas cake and aged barrel rancio characters progress to notes of espresso, cacao and dark chocolate, dried apricot and dates. Hints of cardamom, walnut and burnt buttered toast with marmalade round out the flavour profile of this minimum 40 year old spirit. Any potential alcohol hotness is offset with tannins from barrel maturation, giving an old oak barrel and prune length. This is a spirit that will mature and reveal its intense character with age.
This five year old rum is packed full of caramel, spiced oak and toffee apple notes. Aged first in ex-brandy vats and finished in ex-bourbon vats, this spirit has a rich, golden hue with lingering characteristics of flowers, honey and oak. Recommended to be served neat or over ice.
Marionette Dry Cassis
Crème de cassis is a rich, deep purple blackcurrant liqueur that is popular in France. This Australian take on the aperitif is opaque, black cherry red in colour and loaded with blackcurrant flavour along with hints of fresh cranberry. It is recommended that Dry Cassis be added to white wine, to make the pale, fruity pink aperitif Kir, to sparkling wine, to make a Kir Royale, or to cider, to make a Kir Normand.
Champion Alternative Spirits
White Dog Malt Spirit is the essence of Manly Spirits Co.’s single malt whisky, bottled as the white spirit straight off the still. It is distinctively aromatic and full-bodied, with generous grain and cereal notes of Australian malted barley. This spirit is best served in a whisky buck or Old Fashioned cocktail.
