DIAGEO WORLD CLASS has announced Australia’s Top 20 finalists for 2018.
The 20 were selected from an initial 500 entrants, after impressing this year’s judges with their WANDERLUST themed cocktails.
Bartenders were required to submit a cocktail in either one or both of the categories HOME and AWAY. HOME cocktails needed to evoke or be inspired by a place in Australia, while AWAY cocktails had to encapsulate an overseas destination.
Diageo’s brand ambassadors scored each of these entries for their quality, story, technique and visual appeal to then narrow them down to a Top 100.
From this Top 100 came the final Top 20, recognised for their efforts to ‘Break the Mould’ by challenging bartending conventions and creating flavour through alternative methods.
Congratulations to the following Top 20!
This Top 20 will now battle it out over two days in April in a series of challenges that will launch them out of their comfort zones, expand their knowledge of flavours and hone their bartending skills.
The list of judges for these challenges and experts hosting educational workshops for the bartenders include notable names such as Michael Madrusan, Milk & Honey and founder of The Everleigh and The Elk Room in Melbourne; Danielle Alvarez, executive chef of Fred’s in Paddington; Fenella Kernebone, curator of TedxSydney and respected television and radio presenter; and Melissa Leong, food writer and media personality.
Kaitlyn Stewart, World Class Global Bartender of the Year 2017 and Krystal Hart, the DIAGEO WORLD CLASS national ambassador will also be on hand to guide the 20 over the two days of competition.
The overall winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Berlin to represent Australia in the DIAGEO WORLD CLASS Global Finals in October. They will then be taken on a cocktail tour of Europe to visit some of the world’s greatest bars and see the iconic Diageo distilleries, including the home of Johnnie Walker in Scotland and the stunning ‘chez CÎROC’ in the south of France.
The winner will be announced on the 24th of April, so keep your eyes peeled for the official announcement!
