Contemporary Turkish restaurant, Yagiz in South Yarra, has opened an adjoining cocktail bar.
Inspired by the heritage of Turkish owner and head chef, Murat Ovaz, the inviting, intimate space is furnished with subtle, yet intricate Middle-Eastern inspired touches.
Guests are invited to take a seat at the brass-topped bar or windowsill and select from the menu of bespoke cocktails or boutique Turkish wines.
Here, cocktails are the focus, with the standout being the Turkish Delight – a sweet yet refreshing apperitivo or dessert cocktail, made from vodka, cacao, citrus, rose water, egg white garnished with rose fairy floss and a dusting of pistachio powder.
Other creations such as the Anatolian Dream and the Taksim Tipple are a nod to the rich culture of Turkey, both named after regions with exciting nightlife.
The wine list crafted by award-winning sommelier Christian Maier is designed to showcase Turkey’s small scale, lesser known producers and varietals.
“The wine list at Yagiz is open-minded and nonconformist, emphasising smaller producers and lesser known wines,” says Maier.
“Its collection spans the world, with an emphasis on Turkish wines, and Australian and European references for good measure.”
In Turkey, Akman Sefasi, the equivalent of Happy Hour, features a selection of mezze-style snacks, or share plates, to compliment the drinks. At Yagiz, guests can choose from dishes such as Tursu – house pickles, Pastirma Sis – spicy air-dried beef, goat cheese, date, Marine Levrek – pickled sea bream, Sigara Boregi – confit of chicken cigar, Istiridye – South Pacific oysters or Labne Kizartma – fried house made labneh balls.
In the tradition of true Turkish hospitality, guests are invited to sit and have a cocktail or two before their dinner reservation at the restaurant, or simply relax in the warm atmosphere with a drink in hand after a long hard day at the office.
