Li Tong of Lotus Lounge in Guangzhou, China, has taken out the title of 2017 Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition winner.
After winning the Chinese finals, Li was flown to Jalisco, Mexico where she competed against 15 other countries in the semi-finals held at Hacienda Patrón.
This saw her secure a place in the grand final, where she battled against the five other top contestants for the title.
The final six comprised of Li; David Robinson of Hot Tamale in Darwin, Australia; Omer Gazit from 223 Cocktail Bar, Tel Aviv; Tim Devriendt of The Cobbler, Ghent; Greg Almeida from Scarfes Bar at Rosewood Hotel, London and Jin Woo-Lee of The Four Seasons Hotel, Seoul, South Korea.
Each of the finalists were required to recreate their nationals winning cocktail in front of the panel of a leading industry judges, which consisted of Patrón’s Chief Marketing Officer, Lee Applbaum; Director of Operations, David Rodriguez; Editor of Difford’s Guide, Simon Difford and Editor of Buena Masa, Stephanie Quiles.
Li stunned the judges with her ‘Dancing Bees’ cocktail, a mix of Patrón Reposado, yellow chartreuse, chamomile yuzu shrub, MONIN passionfruit syrup, and lime, topped with soda.
When asked about the competition, Li said:
“I have met a lot of new friends and learnt a lot during the journey. The Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition has been so exciting, I’ve been dreaming about seeing real agave and my dream has come true. I’m so excited to have won, and can’t wait to go back to China and tell my family. Perfection comes from the heart, it’s passion and it’s doing what we love, winning the competition has given me so much confidence to keep going and do something special as a bartender.”
With the competition this year spanning five continents, Chief Marketing Manager Lee Applbaum said it has been a strong year for the Patrón Perfectionists competition.

Li Tong’s cocktail, “Dancing Bees”
60ml Patrón Reposado tequila
10ml Yellow Chartreuse
20ml Chamomile yuzu shrub (several pinches of dried chamomile, 200ml yuzu puree, 200g sugar, 50ml, apple cider vinegar, 200ml water)
15ml MONIN passionfruit syrup
30ml Lime juice
Place in all ingredients bar soda water to a Boston shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a rocks glass. Top with soda water.
