Merivale will be adding a touch of old-fashioned class to the Northern Beaches this January when they open Bert’s, a nostalgic nod to the style of the 1930s.
The relaxed, informal brasserie and bar will be situated in the grounds of local favourite The Newport, and will have views over the stunning Pittwater estuary.
Mirroring its surrounds, the restaurant will serve a menu based on European seafood classics, with both share plates and individual portions on offer.
At the entrance, guests will observe an impressive cellar, home to the extensive wine list curated by Merivale Group sommelier MS Franck Moreau.
The focus will be predominantly on classic Australian wines, including back vintages of semillon, shiraz, cabernet and riesling, as well as a large selection of rosés. There will also be a number of emerging smaller producers on the list, and a few European bottlings.
Group bars manager, Sam Egerton, has fashioned a cocktail list inspired by the grand European and American hotels and country clubs of yesteryear.
Each serve is based on classic cocktails, with seasonal twists from the use of local produce. This includes Sam’s version of a classic Royale, featuring Absolut Elyx vodka, ginger cordial and champagne, finished with finger lime caviar. The bar will dish up a range of snacks from the main menu and finger food, such as tea sandwiches.
When asked about the opening of Bert’s, Justin Hemmes, chief executive officer of Merivale Group, said:
“The Newport has always held a very special place in the hearts of the Northern Beaches community; it is a truly magnificent site, in an incredible location. Our long-term vision for the venue is to create a destination that genuinely has something for everyone – all occasions, ages, budgets and tastes.
We opened the outdoor area first to provide a vibrant gathering place where friends and families can get together over a beer and a casual bite to eat. Now, with the launch of Bert’s, we can also offer a special experience for those wanting that little something extra. Outstanding food and exceptional service in a beautiful setting – but still very comfortable and relaxed”.
Bert’s is set to open in January with the exact date yet to be confirmed.
