Five Finalists of the Australian Angostura Cocktail Challenge Final

The Australian final of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge which takes place on 17 September in Sydney is down to five finalists.

Congratulations to Michael Chiem, PS40 (NSW), Dan Gregory, Canvas (QLD), Liam Monk, Bobeche (WA), Lachlan Robinson, Bobeche (WA) and Vini Wang, Hains & Co (SA) who have qualified for the National Final.

The competition for the final requires each bartender to create and present four cocktails (two of each example – one for judging and one for photography) with two Angostura Rum cocktails and two Amaro di Angostura cocktails, all in just seven minutes, pitting their skills against the clock. To make the challenge even more difficult, each finalist must talk to the judges whilst presenting and answer the questions, “What does Angostura specifically bring to the flavour of this cocktail?” and, “What inspired you to make this cocktail?”

The winner of the National Final not only picks up AU$10,000 and a year’s contract as the Australian Angostura Brand Ambassador, they will then go on to compete in the Finals of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge 2018 in Trinidad and Tobago in February 2018, where they’ll enjoy the once in a lifetime experience of Trinidad and Tobago’s famous Carnival.

The winner of the Global Final takes home a further US$10K cash, plus the title of Global Champion, along with a two-year contract as Angostura’s Global Brand Ambassador.

The ultimate winner of the Global Finals takes home a cash prize of US$10,000, the title of Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge Champion 2018, and a two-year contract as Angostura’s Global Brand Ambassador, representing Angostura aromatic bitters, Angostura orange bitters, Angostura Rums and Amaro di Angostura.

Tanya Mah, Angostura Brand Manager at island2island, says, “One thing you can count on in Australia is incredibly passionate and talented bartenders. We’ve been so impressed by the creativity and the skills of everyone who has competed so far.

At this stage of the competition, the final five will have to be more innovative and demonstrate their capacity to create well-balanced cocktails to stand out from others. They will need to think about the fact we are also looking for someone to represent Angostura as an ambassador and we’re looking to send the very best bartender to Trinidad to compete.”

The Australian final of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge will be held at Lot 1, 18 York Street, Sydney CBD on 17 September.
